In this edition of Staff Picks: an Oakland emcee brings the most recent chapter of his Hustla Movement mixtape series to BitTorrent Bundle. Young Gully confronts the realities he’s experienced growing up in East Oakland in his music. His songs the depict tales of poverty, drug dealing and violence; common subjects in the gangster rap genre. Gully breaks the mold, however, by choosing to constructively address the issues facing his community instead of glorifying criminal activity.
The Fader has called him an intelligent rapper “who doesn’t have to hew to one style to be dope.” OaklandLocal.com has called for the hip hop world to give their attention to Gully, whose The Grant Station concept album benefited the family of Oscar Grant, an unarmed man shot and killed by Bay Area Transit Police while lying on his stomach, handcuffed. Now we’re doing our part to showcase this budding Bay Area emcee.
