Staff Picks: The Best of Bundle 2014
2014/12/22

From Atari Teenage Riot to Thom Yorke: 20 essential downloads from 2014.

Thom Yorke: Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes

Yorke’s first solo album in eight years is also the first paygated Bundle. Eight sparse, haunting tracks that demand deep listening.

Bishop Nehru and MF DOOM: NehruvianDOOM

The prodigiously talented / crazy young MC Bishop Nehru is possibly saving New York hip hop. Here, an in-depth look at 2014’s collaboration between Nehru and DOOM, featuring four mixtapes, art, music videos, and more.

Diplo: F10rida

Diplo began work on his first album ten years ago, between Philadelphia and Florida, between jobs, after hours, on the bus, and inside his head. Florida, released in 2004 on Big Dada, is Southern lit through the lens of trip-hop. The Bundle includes the full album, stems, curated art, and also: a trove of emails from Diplo in the 90s, which is 100% required reading.

Atari Teenage Riot: Is This Hyperreal

“I wish I could go back in time to tell my 15-year-old self that this happened.”

Ryan Hemsworth: Hemsworth Country

A career-spanning Bundle containing seven albums from one of electronic’s most exciting young producers.

Fool’s Gold: Draft Picks 2014

A curated mixtape highlighting the best of the Brooklyn label’s newest signees, including Salva, Hoodboi, Giraffage, TroyBoi, High Klassified, gLAdiator, Brenmar, and Shash’U.

Jeff Broadway: Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton

Stones Throw Records started out as a eulogy; an imprint formed in 1996 by Chris Manak (Peanut Butter Wolf) to posthumously publish the work of his partner, Charles Hicks (Charizma). It came to define a generation of sound: from Madlib and Dilla, to Aloe Blacc and Flying Lotus. Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton tells the true story of a fabled label in live concert film, archival footage, home video, photographs, and interviews with Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, Jeff Jank, Kanye West, Questlove, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and more. The Bundle includes an exclusive preview of the film, plus three tracks from Stones Throw’s vault.

City And Colour: Live in Australia

Four tracks from the indie singer-songwriter, plus a two track bonus: “Paradise” and “We Found Each Other in the Dark”, recorded live in Australia.

Pell: Floating While Dreaming

The debut album from the New Orleans rapper is ethereal, effortless, and beautifully produced.

Hundred Waters: The Moon Rang Like A Bell

Formed in 2011, Hundred Waters defies genres and expectations. Classical and rock. In sharp focus and gauzy diffusion. An indie band, on an electronic label (Skrillex’s OWSLA). “A watercolor wash of possibilities, a suspension of time, an embrace of textural experiment and open-ended expectations,” in the words of the Times. Four kids from Florida whose songs stay with us, long after they’ve stopped playing. The BitTorrent Bundle includes 6 tracks from the band’s 2014 release The Moon Rang Like A Bell, the album booklet, photos, and more.

Drafthouse Films: Mood Indigo

Behind the scenes of 2014’s surrealist love story with Michel Gondry. The BitTorrent Bundle holds curated photography, music, storyboards, plus never-before-seen videos and animations.

De La Soul: Smell The D.A.I.S.Y.

DLS’s 2014 release consists of classic De La Soul lyrics over vintage J Dilla production. The Bundle features eleven tracks, a documentary on Dilla, art, and more.

Alvin Risk: Venture

In the words of LessThan3: “if ever there was a man who didn’t give a fuck about genres, it was Alvin Risk”. Risk’s work spans hard dance, dubstep, house, and moombahton. Venture, revealed over the course of a series of leaks, is the artist’s most complex musical narrative yet.

Sweater Beats: Cloud City EP

2014 was a breakout year for Brooklyn’s Sweater Beats. His anthemic tracks and high-energy remixes have cemented his place as an innovator in bass music, triggering a well-deserved inclusion on the list of “10 Producers Drake Should Sign to OVO Sound”. His latest effort, the 4-track “future-trap” EP Cloud City reinforces why he has become one of the most sought after emerging producers in New York.

Jörg Tittel: Ricky Rouse Has A Gun

Jörg Tittel’s graphic novel is action-comedy set in a Chinese knock-off theme park, filled with unprotected sex, gratuitous violence, and – worst of all – a rip-off rodent. An absurd, beautifully illustrated statement about the weirdness of contemporary copyright culture.

Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough: The Upsetter

Filmmakers Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough spent seven years documenting the strange world of Scratch Perry; and another three self-distributing the film to over 80 theaters across the globe. Their film, The Upsetter, narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Benicio Del Toro, is Scratch’s story, his footage, and his words: an uncommon look at one of music’s (maybe last) true eccentrics and agitators. (It’s also “the best film ever,” according to Lil B. So.)

Morgan Page: Against The World

Page let fans remix his single “Against The World”. These five tracks represent the best of audience submissions.

Zeds Dead: Somewhere Else

The Somewhere Else Bundle from Hooks and DC features the never-before-released track “Love Me”, the full video from “Lost You” featuring Twin Shadow, rare posters, and remix-able stems.

Young & Sick

Every record is just that: an audiovisual artifact, sound and image, memory and history. It is always more than music that gets stuck in our heads. Nick Van Hofwegen’s project Young & Sick explores the blurred lines between songcraft and design; building an animated world around ethereal, shimmering electronic sound. His American Dreams Bundle includes an exclusive demo, music mixes, and art journals.

J. Moore and DJ Hyphen: Northwest Fresh

J.Moore and DJ Hyphen capture the sound of Seattle hip hop circa now, with new music from Nacho Picasso, Peta Tosh, Brothers From Another and more.
